UN Belize



Belize is located in Central America (LAC Region) on the Caribbean Sea coastline . It has an estimated population of 1.13 million people (2011) 

Joined the United Nations on 25 September 1981.

Capital City - Belmopan.

Governance - Democracy. 



There are eighteen (18) United Nations offices/ programmes in Belize :

 Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) -  Main focus is on Food Security and the Right to Food

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) - Main focus is on the Peaceful use of Nuclear science and technology

International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) - Main focus is on the reduction of rural poverty, malnutrition and hunger (project based work)

International Labour Organization (ILO) - Main focus is on workers' rights , the right to work and ending child labour

Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) - Main focus is on the promotion and protection of Human Rights

Pan -American Health Orcanization (PAHO/WHO)PAHO/WHO) - Main foucs is on the right to health, management and control of diseases, epidemics and pandemics.


UNAIDS - Main focus - ending stigma and reducing the rates of HIV  infection to zero

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)  - Main Focus right to development, support for capacity building for human development , advocacy and support for MDG, Post 2015 Agenda and Human Rights

United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) - Main focus is on the right to a clean and sustainable environment , climate change and sustainable resource management for the future

United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) - Main foucs on the promotion and protection of indigenous cultures, languages

United Nations Population Fund ( UNFPA) - Main foucs is on population issues including the right to maternal and family health and the righs of the girl child.

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) - Main foucs is on the right to
