Peace & Security

The UN was created following the second World War, because the international community did not want mankind to suffer the pain and horror suffered by millions of people around the world.  Since then there have been many conflicts and organised movements that threaten the  safety and security globally.

In the Caribbean some of those issues include - the illicit trade of small arms, illegal drugs , human trafficking, spreading radical terrorist ideology in addition to other regional and local issues of crime and violence.

Since 1948 UN deployed 74 missions around the world. Today there are 14 active missions across 4 continents

UN spends 6.7 billion dollars on peacekeeping, that is 0.5 % of global military spending

There are 100 thousand personnel deployed in peacekeeping missions. 600 of them are responsible for protecting human rights, gender equality and addressing sexual harassment

Conflict Prevention

The main strategies for preventing disputes from escalating into conflict, and for preventing the recurrence of conflict, are preventive diplomacy and preventive disarmament. Preventive diplomacy refers to action taken to prevent disputes from arising or from escalating into conflicts, and to limit the spread of conflicts when they occur. It may take the form of mediation, conciliation or negotiation.

Prevention of Genocide

The responsibility to protect embodies a political commitment to end the worst forms of violence and persecution. It seeks to narrow the gap between Member States’ pre-existing obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law and the reality faced by populations at risk of genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity.
