WHAT:

Over one hundred world leaders will gather at UN Headquarters in New York this month to signal how they will boost action on climate change, accelerate progress on sustainable development, and respond to other issues of global concern.At five major events taking place from 23 to 27 September, Heads of State and Government are expected to make strong commitments and mobilize action that will ignite the transformation needed to secure healthy, peaceful and prosperous lives for all.

WHY:

Four years after breakthrough international agreements on climate change, sustainable development, and financing for development, action is not yet advancing at the speed or scale required. 1 Week – 5 Summits – 17 Goals:

Underpinning the high-level week are the Sustainable Development Goals, adopted by all world leaders in 2015. The 17 interconnected Goals are a universal call to action to end poverty and hunger, expand access to health, education, justice and jobs, while protecting our planet from environmental degradation.

Climate Action Summit 23 September, General Assembly Hall

The UN Secretary-General is hosting the Climate Action Summit to boost ambition and accelerate action to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. Leaders from government, the private sector and civil society will present concrete actions, plans and initiatives to tackle climate change. High-level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage 23 September, Trusteeship Council Chamber

Under the theme “Universal Health Coverage: Moving Together to Build a Healthier World,” the President of the General Assembly is convening the first-ever high-level meeting of the General Assembly on universal health coverage, to launch new efforts to provide access for all to affordable, inclusive and resilient health systems. The meeting will approve a political declaration galvanizing global commitments to ensure health for all. Summit24-25 September, Trusteeship Council Chamber

The High-level Political Forum under the auspices of the General Assembly – the first UN Summit on the Sustainable Development Goals since the adoption of the landmark 2030 Agenda – will allow world leaders and other stakeholders to demonstrate their continued strong commitment, provide political guidance and identify specific actions to accelerate progress, as we move towards the five-year anniversary of the Goals, with just over a decade left to the target date of 2030. Dialogue on Financing for Development 26 September, Trusteeship Council Chamber

The High-level Dialogue on Financing for Development convened by the President of the General Assembly will bring together leaders from governments, business and the financial sector to help unlock the resources and partnerships needed to make the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Addis Ababa Action Agenda a reality. The event is expected to mobilize actions and announce initiatives by Member States and other stakeholders. Midterm Review of the SAMOA Pathway27 September, Trusteeship Council Chamber

World leaders from both developed and developing States gathering for the General Assembly high-level review of the SAMOA Pathway – an international framework for the sustainable development of Small Island Developing States – will discuss measures to address the devastating impacts of climate change, build economic and environmental resilience, and tackle other challenges affecting small islands.
