On 24 October 2019, UNIC joined with the Institute of International Relations’ Model UN Club to observe UN Day 2019. The Centre showcased its travelling exhibit on the SDG’s doors art project, which is the outcome of a joint activity between the UNIC and the first SDG secondary school in Trinidad  and Tobago – St Josephs Convent in San Fernando. The project included student from the school using art as a tool to express their interpretation of the seventeen targets. The institute’s library also created a discover the SDGs game by spinning a “SDG Wheel” that then encouraged the player to read more about each of the 17 goals.

The UNIC also took the opportunity to engage members of the Model UN Club in a dialogue about the Sustainable Development Goals and how young people can become involved in helping their communities with achieving the SDGs through personal and collective action. The young people at the event were encouraged to start thinking about finding innovative ways to take action for a better community, country and planet.  They were told about some of the work that other young people around the world are already doing that was highlighted during the youth MUN summit in April 2019 at the UN head offices in New York. For example planting trees across India, dignity kits distribution to poor students in the US.

The UNIC also spoke about Caribbean youth who attended the Youth Climate Summit in September and the projects that they are working on in the region.  The common threads for the activism of all of these young people are that they want a better future for the planet and also see value in the Sustainable Development Goals.
